Exhibition: Night on the Lake at Jones Gallery

  • Jones Gallery 122 Prince William Street Saint John, NB, E2L 2B6 Canada (map)

A Solo Exhibition at Jones Gallery in Saint John, New Brunswick

The figures in the exhibition Night On the Lake find themselves in moments of quiet reflection seeking respite among the natural world.  Submerged in water, by an apple tree, or dissolving into a sunset, the natural elements in the paintings (sun, moon, tree, water) are at times, an extension of the figure’s psychological states.  Though each of these vignettes have their roots in lived or observed experiences, I have tried to push the work into a space outside the margins of the tangible world allowing various elements in each painting to take on symbolic and at times ominous significance. In Night on the Lake floating hands lead us upwards to two moons that become a pair of eyes. In Winner’s Wreath a wolf conceals itself in the bouquet. In Sunset on the Farm the figure is both above and below the water, floating in a kind of final rest. Peaceful states and quiet unease are juxtaposed allowing for multiple layers of meaning.
